Welcome to Knit A Square from the middle of Canada! Kinda snowy out there and the windchill is -34C but I’m inside so that’s good. Greetings! We’re very glad to have you with us. Please feel free to visit Discussions or join Groups to talk about things or go to Photos to see what some members are up to. These are in a line on top of the page, just click on them. As for the photos, talk about yarn artistry! Try not to be intimidated by some squares and sweaters, they’re very inspiring. I’m a plain square person myself but it’s lovely to view the more artsy squares. KAS is a very positive group and all these squares and sweaters and hats etc. go to help the poorest of the poor, the South African AIDS/HIV orphans who are parent-less and being cared for by many good and kind folk in often desperate surroundings. Our crocheted, knitted and sewn items can help give a child hope for the future because they are not forgotten, plus warmth and a smile and often a toy to cuddle. Glad you’re with us!
Hello Ada, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters. As the name implies, we focus on sending 8” x 8”(20 cm x 20 cm) squares to be made into blankets to provide comfort to the many children in need.
Looking for patterns? Check the KAS Pattern Book [see menu bar above] for garments and squares for the children. We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old. This age group is in need of warm garments and blankets.
We have monthly challenges that you might be interested in joining. This month we are focussing on long-sleeved garments for the children to wear during their cold winters. Click here to read all about it ! [This challenge runs until April so feel free to join any time ]
Hi Ada. Welcome to KAS. I'm new as well. I'm a weaver, but I dabble in knit and crochet. What's your specialty? We're under a blanket of snow now in NC, USA, so warm projects like those for KAS are cozy for me to make and for the children to wear. Wool warms you twice!
Welcome to KAS from over here in VERY sunny Western Australia.
Do you like to knit or crochet, or perhaps both? I am a knitter.
Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people from around the world, squares are needed all the time. The basic square being a garter single colour or striped square or I think it is single or double crochet or if your preference is for crochet. By clicking on the KASpattern book tab at the top of the page you can find lots of other ideas if you are so inclined.
Please check out the 'Helpful Hints' tab at the top of the page as this may answer many initial questions you may have. Any other questions...just ask...we are here to help. :))
If you'd like to see what other KASers have been making the photo tab is a goodie. Anything you care to make and send will be so appreciated by Ronda and the team and the children of South Africa.
If you want to see the most active discussions at present, you may like to click on the 'main page' tab and they are listed in the centre...just pick one and click on it. It is a large website, but with so much fun and info...please take your time...peruse at your leisure. :))
Thank you so much for joining us....and we hope you enjoy not only knitting/crocheting for KAS but the fun and friendship we all enjoy along the way.
