Hi from snowy Melton Mowbray - I was wondering if you had seen my post in the UK discussion group about the KAS 10th birthday party I am organising this August.  It would be lovely if some of my local East Midlands KAS sisters were able to be there.

Welcome to KAS from Knoxville, TN!  So glad you've joined us in our efforts to warm the orphans and vulnerable children of South Africa!

Welcome again, from Clarkesville, Georgia!  Not quite a "neighbor", but not too far either LOL!  So happy to have you here and looking forward to seeing your mittens when you get them done!

Hello Amy, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.  As the name implies, we focus on sending 8” x 8”(20 cm x 20 cm) squares to be made into blankets to provide comfort to the many children in need.

I do hope you find a good mitten pattern, the children would appreciate warm hands during their cold weather.  Would you add the pattern to member's patterns found here

If you haven't already, please visit “Helpful Hints” [see menu bar above] for information about:

      - Postage information

We have a monthly challenge as well.  This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting.  An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting. The December challenge is “It’s a Red Month”.  The colour red has been chosen to honour AIDS awareness day on December 1.  This is the perfect way to use your red yarn or pair it with another colour for an interesting pattern.

At the same time we are running a second challenge: KAS Reaches Great Heights for the Children has us making squares to reach the height of Table Mountain in South Africa.  That is 178,000 squares !   Click here to join us by adding your squares and a photo, if possible, to the total.

If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month.  Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Since parcels are arriving all the time, please use the most inexpensive way to send.  Whenever your parcel arrives, it will be appreciated.

Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people around the world, squares are needed all the time.

We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option in the tabs above and follow the prompts.

      Enjoy !
