A warm welcome to Knit A Square from over here in Western Australia. :))
Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of Knit-A-Square. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people from around the world, squares are needed all the time. The basic square being a garter stitch/single colour or striped square or I think it is single or double crochet if your preference is for crochet. By clicking on the KASpattern book tab at the top of the page you can also find lots of other patterns provided by our fellow KASers.
Please check out the 'Helpful Hints' tab at the top of the page as this may answer many initial questions you may have and will help you get started. Any other questions...just ask...we love to help. :))
Here is a link to postage information, including our packing slip that we attach INSIDE our parcel to assist in the unpacking/recording process at Knit-A-Square in S. Africa.
If you'd like to see what other KASers have been making please click on the photo tab at the top of the page....and feel free to add photos of your own work...we would love to see them. Just click on 'add photos' and follow the prompts. Anything you care to make and send will be so appreciated by Ronda and the team and the children of South Africa.
If you want to see the most active discussions at present, you may like to click on the 'main page' tab and they are listed in the centre of that page...just pick one and click on it. It is a large website, but with so much fun and info.
Each month we have a fun theme to inspire and motivate us. If you would like to see this month's theme, please click on this link:
A warm welcome to Knit-A-Square (KAS), from Wales in the UK.
KAS is a wonderful world-wide community of caring people who knit and crochet, to help keep orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa warm during their very cold winters.
Through the forum, and the tabs across the top of the page, you are able to:
- Find the important postage information that you need before posting your parcel, including the Packing Slip that needs to be included inside every parcel. This also has the important details of how to label your parcel to prevent volunteers in SA being charged to receive it. Here you can also ask any questions you may have (Helpful Hints).
- Learn what is happening in South Africa and see photo's of unpacking and sorting, completed blankets and distributions to the children (South Africa Reports).
- Share in a variety of discussions either by following or contributing. Each month we have a different theme, these are for fun and inspiration. Please join in if you wish (Discussion Categories).
- Access the free pattern book. The garment patterns have been designed by KAS to meet the specific needs of the children, most of whom are 3 - 9 years old. There are also plenty of lovely patterns for squares too. It is worth having a look, as it explains the importance of leaving a 20" tail on each square, and how to 'butterfly' the tails before sending (KAS Pattern Book).
- See photo's of other members work, and share your own. This is inspirational! (Photos).
- Relax, chat and have a laugh with other members (Sharea Yarn).
- Join groups if you wish (Groups).
- Purchase items, which not only helps KAS financially, but provides additional items for the children (KAS Shop).
Our main focus is making 8" x 8"(20cmx 20cm) squares for blankets. They can be knitted or crocheted in any stitch, as every square is valued whether they be plain or fancy! Most importantly, they need to be the right size for the volunteers in SA to sew together into lovely warm blankets for the children.
There are 35 squares in each blanket, all made by caring people across the world who want to keep vulnerable children warm. The volunteers in SA distribute the blankets and warm garments to the vulnerable and needy children, who are then wrapped in warmth and the assurance that someone cares.
I hope you enjoy both knitting /crocheting for the children and the fellowship of the other like minded KAS members across the world.
