Welcome to KAS, Barbara from up in Canada above MN. I find KAS such a rewarding cause to be involved in and I hope you enjoy it too. Do check out the New Member Guide which is found by clicking "Main Page" in the header above. To reach the Discussions just click Forum above and if you click on Photos above, you will see items that are heading to Africa, in all colors and shapes, plus those that have arrived there. If you click on Groups, above, you can join the enthusiastic USA group or any groups you wish, to chat with. Any questions just PM me. :) So, welcome to Knit A Square! Blankets and hats and sweaters direct from our hands to their hearts, a win-win.
And now we’re helping out over in Zimbabwe too and they need everything over there. I just love making a real difference in a child’s life. So welcome aboard!
The recommended size needle is US #10 and you cast on 32 stitches. This should make an 8 inch square. If you square turns out larger, use a smaller needle, or if it is smaller than 8 inches, use a larger needle. Sometimes, really thick yarn gives you a bigger square, so you might want to use a size 9 needle if the yarn is really thick. If your yarn is very thin, then use two strands together, the same color or 2 different colors! The squares should be thick for the most warmth. Please ask any questions and I'll be happy to answer them or lead you to answers!
Welcome, Barbara. Glad you found KAS. We are a wonderful bunch of people from around the world who knit and crochet to help keep the children of South Africa warm. So glad you joined us!
