Hi Carolyn, I hope you don't mind, but I've read the comments between you and Bev. Thank you for your interest in this area, it is important to make people aware of KAS.
Knit-a-Square is listed on Lion Brand's charity page. When doing a search, 'South Africa' must be listed in the country option. KAS is a very small organization so is only a registered charity in South Africa not other countries. KasCare is the umbrella organization of which Knit-a-Square is a major component. [registered in Australia]
Lion Brand was instrumental in spreading the word about KAS. Lion Brand promoted KAS in 2009 which is where I, and many others, learned about it. A bit of history for you :-)
You might enjoy reading about the development of KAS by visiting www.knit-a-square.com
I have been a member of Lionbrand for a while, but must confess just to access their patterns and had not noticed the charity section before. You might like to send the info to Pam Antink or if you want I can do it for you. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. :)
Greetings Carolyn from up in Canada above MN! Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African HIV/Aids orphans and the poorest of the poor. Glad to have you with us! It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, in the header above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world, not to mention Patterns where you can get inspired with easy level patterns of things the children really need, the right sizes and shapes.
When you click on Discussions, the Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section above) shows the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Café KAS Discussion section, which contains the Furry, Feathered and Fishy Companions and Share A Yarn threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic! Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
Welcome, Carolyn, from suburban Philadelphia. They do get snow in South Africa, especially in the higher elevations. They are just coming into spring now as their seasons are opposite to ours. So glad you've joined us!
Hello Carolyn, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters. As the name implies, we focus on sending 8” x 8”(20 cm x 20 cm) squares to be made into blankets to provide comfort to the many children in need.
Welcome to KAS from over here in Western Australia. :))
Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people from around the world, squares are needed all the time. The basic square being a garter stitch/single colour or striped square or I think it is single or double crochet if your preference is for crochet. By clicking on the KASpattern book tab at the top of the page you can also find lots of other patterns provided by our fellow KASers.
If you click on the groups tab at the top of the page you will find all the different groups and you are free to join as many as you would like. :))
Please check out the 'Helpful Hints' tab at the top of the page as this may answer many initial questions you may have and will help you get started. Any other questions...just ask...we love to help. :))
If you'd like to see what other KASers have been making please click on the photo tab at the top of the page....and feel free to add photos of your own work...we would love to see them. Just click on 'add photos' and follow the prompts. Anything you care to make and send will be so appreciated by Ronda and the team and the children of South Africa.
If you want to see the most active discussions at present, you may like to click on the 'main page' tab and they are listed in the centre of that page...just pick one and click on it. It is a large website, but with so much fun and info.
We also have a theme for every month that you might like to view and participate in, but there is absolutely no pressure to do so. The theme for August can be found here:

Carolyn, we all can't be fast knitters but you are spreading the word through your groups which is another way to help the children. Linda x
