Just to give you a little more info....I find (here in Oz) we are also required to put some monetary value in a little box on the customs form. I always just put $1. This keeps the postal service happy and ensures that duty is not payable (or at the most a very small amount) upon receival in S. Africa, which is most important as this charity runs on the tightest of budgets.
Happy knitting...
p.s. when you send your squares please record them in the 2012 Knit A squillion Tally...if you need assistance, please ask...I would be happy to help. :))
Hi Diane and a very warm welcome to KAS from Norfolk UK. We are a very friendly bunch so please feel free to ask any questions, there is always somebody with an answer, as I have found out!
Do take a look around the site using the tabs at the top of the page. The photo section has some wonderful pics of peoples work and when you feel ready it would be great to see some of your work but it isn’t a necessity to do this. It’s a great place for ideas and inspiration to keep the children warm.
So glad you have joined us. Happy knitting/crocheting :)
Welcome to KAS...from over on the west side of Oz...its great to have another Aussie member. If you would like to, please click on the groups tab at the top of the page and join the 'Downunder and Land of the Long White Cloud' group. This is where we Aussies and NZers discuss and share info relevant to our part of the world...e.g. postage rates, great places to buy yarn etc. You are also welcome to check out all the groups and join as many as you like.
Hello Diane, so glad you’ve joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.
Would you like to try something different ? Then, you might like the Monthly challenge. This is a fun way to try new ideas or patterns. Every month, a theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.
This month’s challenge is In Celebration of the Plain Jane. Check out the different interpretations of a “Plain Jane” or basic square. Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes are the backbone of KAS. Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares are needed all the time.
Greetings Diane from over in the middle of Canada! Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us. It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.
The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Anyone Want to Chat Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic! Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
Hi Dianne, Welcome to the KAS Forum from the UK. I hope you will enjoy being part of this friendly & lively community. Do you knit or crochet or both? Around the world caring people are all taking direct action and team-working with the Ladies of the Soweto Comfort Club - it is making a difference to many parentless children.
You can also personalize your own page by clicking on the My Page tab on the menu. Also you can access Settings on this page and set your privacy terms. For questions click on the Forum tab and then KAS - Questions, Answers and Help.
Very glad your web search directed to you our global knitting family! Check out the Hello & Welcome Letter by clicking the "Main Page" tab above. There you will find all kinds of information about KAS. Another great section to look over is the Photo tab - everyone is so supportive of the work on display.
KAS also loves teddies, we try to give each child a blanket, hat & cuddly toy. Also the orphanages like the teddies, because when children (if they are lucky enough to get a place) arrive they are traumatised at having lost their parent, so they are given a teddy - they do not let go of them for 2 weeks!
