      Hi Ellie,

We live in Elkins Park, Cheltenham Township and my son recently moved to an apartment in Bryn Mawr. Small world! He works for Vanguard in Malvern and wanted to be closer to work. I am a teacher, also. I have a private tutoring practice currently and work with children in 1st grade through middle school. I've had a knitting club in the past and the girls knitted squares for KAS. That was a lot of fun! What part of Philly are you from? I grew up in Feltonville, near Olney and my husband is from the NE. We've lived near 5th  & Cheltenham for the last 30 years. Enjoy the challenge of knitting different patterns and with varied yarn. This is a great group! Join the US Group for more connections. Ta Ta for now!

      Ellie,

I have not knitted for many years.  I decided to try knitting again for charity projects.  The 8 inch square was a perfect project to get started knitting again.  I live in Estes Park, CO in the summer and in Big Water, UT in the winter.  Big Water, UT is just across the border from Page, AZ.  I am retired so have plenty of time for knitting.  I love to hike, so I will hike to a high point, or a lake, etc., and then sit in the sun and knit for awhile.

Welcome to the KAS Forum from Knoxville, TN!  So glad you've joined us in our efforts to warm orphans and vulnerable children of South Africa!

Hello Eleanor, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.  As the name implies, we are focussed on sending 8” x 8”(20 cm x 20 cm) squares to be made into blankets to provide comfort to the many children in need.

Looking for patterns?  Check the KAS Pattern Book for garments and squares for the children.  We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old.

Please visit “Helpful Hints” [see menu bar above] for information about:

      - Questions you may have (FAQs),

      - How to navigate the forum,

      - Postage information and

      - Learn when your squares arrived in South Africa!

We have a monthly challenge as well.  This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting.  An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting. The November challenge is Toys and Games and Teddy bears ! Do you have a special memory of a favourite toy or game from your childhood? That could be a wonderful inspiration for squares!

At the same time we are running a second challenge: KAS Reaches Great Heights for the Children has us making squares to reach the height of Table Mountain in South Africa.  That is 178,000 squares !   Click here to join us by adding your squares and a photo, if possible, to the total.

If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month.  Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Since parcels are arriving all the time, please use the most inexpensive way to send your parcel.  Whenever your parcel arrives, it will be appreciated.

Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people around the world, squares are needed all the time.

We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option in the tabs above and follow the prompts.

      Enjoy !
