Sorry, I have just realised that I did not answer your question re the monthly themes. Towards the end of each year a discussion is posted, asking for members to put forward suggestions for the following year. I think the list is probably just about finalised now, but you may like to check out the discussion that has been running and it will give you some idea of what will no doubt become final in the coming weeks.
Wow! I have just been checking out the facebook page. What a FABULOUS organisation. Here is a link that you may be able to use when you present KAS to your club.
Just an additional note, in the notes it mentions needing 32-36 stitches. I find, with most 8 ply acrylic yarns that we have over here in WA, I use 4.5mm knitting needles(and sometimes even 4mm if the yarn is thinner than usual) and about 37-40 stitches. For expediency and ease for the volunteers in South Africa when creating the blankets from our members' squares, we try to get them as close to 8"(20cms) as possible. :)) Through KAS, members (sometimes) donate balls of yarn and needles/hooks to the Gogos (Grandmothers) in South Africa and the volunteers teach them how to knit and crochet for themselves, too. Meaning, that in its own way, KAS empowers women in South Africa, too. It just excites me to read and learn of other organisations reaching out to women (and children), too.
A warm welcome to KAS, from here in wet and windy, Western Australia. It's great to see another Aussie in the forum. :))
Do you like to knit or crochet?....or perhaps both?
Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people from around the world, squares are needed all the time. The basic square being a garter stitch/single colour or striped square or I think it is single or double crochet if your preference is for crochet. By clicking on the KASpattern book tab at the top of the page you can also find lots of other patterns provided by our fellow KASers.
If you click on the groups tab at the top of the page you will find all the different groups and you are free to join as many as you would like. :)) Here is the Aussie group:
Please check out the 'Helpful Hints' tab at the top of the page as this may answer many initial questions you may have and will help you get started. Any other questions...just ask...we love to help. :))
If you'd like to see what other KASers have been making please click on the photo tab at the top of the page....and feel free to add photos of your own work...we would love to see them. Just click on 'add photos' and follow the prompts. Anything you care to make and send will be so appreciated by Ronda and the team and the children of South Africa.
If you want to see the most active discussions at present, you may like to click on the 'main page' tab and they are listed in the centre of that page...just pick one and click on it. It is a large website, but with so much fun and info.
We also have a theme for every month that you might like to view and participate in, but there is absolutely no pressure to do so. The theme for November can be found here:
