Welcome to KAS Jane. I'm across the Pond in Canada but I'll keep my -30 to your weather this past year. Crikey! Don't forget to check out the New Member Guide which is on the Main page listed above. To get to the Discussion Groups I click on Patterns (above in header) then on Squares when it pops down, then on "All Discussions" when you get to the Squares page (it's above the Squares title, top left). Convoluted but works for me. The more hands the merrier and this is a very positive site. :)
Welcome to the forum. I see that you have been looking through the Photo section which is always interesting and inspirational. When you've had a look around if you would like to join the UK group we'd love to have you.
I'm sure you'll hear from Elsie soon as she frequently welcomes people but if you're wanting to start with your hats there is a pattern for hats on the main page http://www.knit-a-square.com/knitted-hat-patterns.html and there are others on the forum on the second page of Categories, under Patterns - Hats. The Whiz Aran makes good hats - I don't know what we'd do without Poundstretchers on this site.
I hope you enjoy being a part of this community - it's very friendly and supportive and you'll make lots of friends. Lovely to have you with us.
I'm in Canada and our patterns are different from yours so you might want to ask on there. They can give you lots of help with patterns. There are also patterns on the site under forum. Just scroll down the page to the pattern section.
Having said that, do you knit or crochet ? I crochet and am willing to help with patterns. I think I have the UK differences sorted :-)
Enjoy your time here. We all are addicted to making squares/hats/etc for the children in South Africa.
