Hi Laura so sorry to learn about Georgia. It is difficult to lose a beloved pet. One of our cats passed away last year. He was 14 years old and we knew it was time but I still miss him.
Please make whatever type of squares you like, the challenge is just a different way to get the members motivated. The children will love the squares with pugs on them !
Hi Laura, many members of the Forum enjoy adding their parcel contents to the Tally/Item Count discussion so we can watch it grow through the year - it isn't compulsory! I'll give you the link below, but you can find it and other discussions if you double click on the word Forum on the menu bar which goes across the page near the top. Hope this helps!
Hi Laura, you can send as many as you like. Parcels are arriving all the time so Ronda and the volunteers are able to sort and make up blankets with the squares that they receive.
You might like to join the US group http://forum.knit-a-square.com/group/unitedstates and discuss the cheapest way to send a parcel. I'm in Canada and the postal system is different here. I do know that all parcels to South Africa go airmail and arrive in a couple of weeks.(ours go by seamail and take 6-8 weeks)
Hi Laura. Good to hear from you. Those Amigurumi patterns are perfect for the orphans, as they can be easily held and one can stuff a lot more of that size of toy into a package than say one big 12" teddy, not to mention they're so lightweight. I have a few patterns for crocheted little guys that I hope to use to stash bust in the New Year as I have a HUGE bag of stuffing that needs a purpose in life. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Diwali or Kwanzaa, Happy Holidays! I'm sure we'll bump into each other over on the Yarnaholics Thread (under Forum, under Cafe KAS). :)
Greetings Laura from up in Canada above MN! Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us. It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.
The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Anyone Want to Chat Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic! Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
Hello Laura, so glad you’ve joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.
If you haven’t already, please read through the welcome message on the forum main page for helpful hints and things that might interest you. The FAQ category should answer any general questions you may have. If not, please ask. http://forum.knit-a-square.com
You might like to join the Monthly challenge. This is a fun way to try new ideas or patterns. Every month, a theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.
This month’s challenge is Plain Jane Squares, Stash Busting and UFOs. Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes are the backbone of KAS. Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares are needed all the time.
If you are like the rest of us you probably have a stash of yarn just waiting to be made into squares ! This is a great way to use up that yarn and keep the children warm. Once it is used, then we can buy more :-)
UFOs are ‘UnFinished Objects’. For example: vests or sweaters, tucked away in the closet needing to be sewn up or a trim added. We will be finishing these and adding photos to the discussion. So please have a look.
We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option at the top of the page and follow the prompts.
Hi Laura, Welcome to the KAS Forum from the UK. I hope you will enjoy being part of this friendly & lively community. Do you knit or crochet or both? We now have our official KAS Pattern Book with all the garments and squares that have been found the most useful to distribute to the children. Just double click on this link : http://forum.knit-a-square.com/page/patterns
For further questions click on the Forum tab for FAQs, How do I or KAS - Questions, Answers and Help.
Very glad your online search directed to you our global knitting family! Check out the Hello & Welcome Letter by clicking the "Main Page" tab above. There you will find all kinds of information about KAS. Another great section to look over is the Photo tab - everyone is so supportive of the work on display.
