Welcome to Knit A Square from the middle of Canada above MN Margaret!  Please feel free to visit Discussions or join Groups in the header above, to talk about things or go to Photos to see what some members are up to.  Talk about yarn artistry! It’s a very positive group and it all goes to help the poorest of the poor, AIDS/HIV orphans who are parentless and being cared for by many good and kind folk in often desperate surroundings.  Our crocheted, knitted and sewn items can help give a child hope, warmth and a smile.  Glad you’re with us!

Small world! We are in Melrose Park and our kids went to Cheltenham public schools. Which school did you attend in Wyncote?

Hi Margaret!  Glad we're "friends"!  I've been knitting squares since 2009 and absolutely love KAS!  It has become a great past-time for me, and I hope you enjoy it here.  It's a great, warm bunch of folks!  I am originally from East Aurora, NY, (outside Buffalo), so am from your end of the US, but have been in Knoxville, TN since 1974.  It has rained for a solid week here, I think, so I was indoors all weekend.  I managed to pump out 11 squares.  So, even the rain is good for something!  Look forward to hopefully seeing your squares!  We all love photos here.  Be sure to check out the forum, if you haven't, it'll make you smile, and inspire you!

      Hi Margaret,

Greetings from a retired kindergarten teacher:-) Delighted to be your friend.

Plain Janes are perfect.  They are the backbone of KAS so please continue to make them.  We'd love to see photos of your squares when you have time [hint, hint]

      Linda

Welcome, Margaret, from your neighbor in Cheltenham near NE Philly. So glad you've joined us!

Hello Margaret, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.

Check out the ‘Helpful Hints’ tab at the top of the page for information. “How Do I ????” and the “FAQ” category should answer any general questions you may have. If not, please ask.

Looking for patterns?  Check the KAS Pattern Book for garments and squares for the children.  We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old.

When you are ready to send your parcel, visit both these sites for important information.  Click Here for tips and here for postage rates.

Once your parcel has been send check the monthly squares lists. Every month, we list the squares, beanies and tops that have arrived in South Africa. To find the ‘Squares lists’ please click the ‘Discussions’ tab [in the bar above] then on “Tallies/Item Count” for an up-to-date listing.  We also have a ‘Drive to Fill Ronda’s KASvan’ with squares and would appreciate if you would add to this challenge.

We have a monthly challenge as well.  This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting.  An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting. This month we are Celebrating Africa and the life of Nelson Mandela.  Please join us to see the lovely squares that have been made and then add a few of your own !

If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month.  Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, know it will be appreciated and that you are keeping children warm.

As always, making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people around the world, squares are needed all the time.

We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option at the top of the page and follow the prompts.

      Enjoy !
