I found trouble with the stitches, needle size and wool trying to make an 8" square. The last ones I did were using a Wendy wool blend in DK and I ended up on 4.5mm needles with 42 stitches making an 8" square. I tried the 32 stitch option and my square was about 5.5 inches...maybe I am a tight knitter.
I like the idea of basketweave as even using DK wool it will give it a better thickness and warmth than plain knitting. I sent my first squares and jumpers to South Africa this morning so having looked at all the beautiful designs that are on the site that others have made I feel very inspired to do more. Everyone on this site is so supportive this must be why it is so successful.
I am nearly 52, been knitting for as long as I can remember. I seem to remember the first thing I ever knitted was a "Sooty" hand puppet when I was in junior school. I like to knit but do not need any more jumpers etc for myself so I was glad I found this site as it will keep my fingers busy during the dark Winter months. I love my garden but there is little to do at this time of year and the days are getting shorter. The knitting will be good knowing it is helping others.
Welcome to our warm KAS community. We hope you will enjoy the forum and your region's group.
There are lots of great discussions going on in the forum, including the monthly challenges.
We are still continuing our July Challenge - keep a newborn warm, making blankets for abandoned babies, and there were some great results for the August in Africa challenge - you can see photographs under the photos menu. (Details of both challenges in the main forum). We're also continuing our September challenge which is also under "challenges" in the forum and have begun the October challenge which is fascinating, please see click the link for further information:
I joined this week as well. I have enjoyed my first week knowing that I am kntting for such a good cause especially a the long dark winter nights set in it is something to do whilst I watch TV at night.
