Welcome to KAS, Penelope from north of you, above MN in Canada. I find KAS such a rewarding cause to be involved in and I hope you enjoy it too. That's awesome that you got that many squares...WOW. If you're interested...do check out the New Member Guide which is found by clicking "Main Page" in the header above. To reach the Discussions just click Forum above and if you click on Photos above, you will see items that are heading to Africa, in all colors and shapes, plus those that have arrived there. If you click on Groups, above, you can join the USA group for suggestions on postage or any group you wish, to chat with. Any questions just PM me. :) So, welcome to Knit A Square! Blankets and hats and sweaters direct from our hands to their hearts, a win-win.
I have been sending squares to KAS for more than 2 years through the US Postal Service. I think all packages go by air to South Africa. Are you considering another service like UPS? I have found their rates to be higher than the postal service. You must mark the package, "For Charity" and "Knitted Squares Only" and "No Commercial Value." When you fill out the customs form, you must write $0 in the column for the value of the squares and declare them as a "gift." That way there will not be any customs duty in South Africa. Will you send one large box or many smaller packages? Some people have suggested putting the squares in the bubble wrap lined plastic or paper envelopes but you can only pack about 20-25 squares that way. Others have filled thick green trash bags and then wrapped them with brown paper and taped them securely. This is lighter than using boxes. I hope this helps! Good for you for being the go-to person and mailing the squares!!
