I have just replied to your question that you posted....before I saw your message to me....so I will reply here, too. :))
Squares of any weight are much appreciated. I have knitted squares in all different weights and all been gratefully received. If the yarn is very thin, as occasionally they are, I have doubled up, but here in OZ, most of our 8 ply (DK) seems thick enough. Some people prefer to knit/crochet in Aran or chunky...it really is personal choice and availability. I think the needle/hook size is probably just meant to be a guide for those who are unsure what size to use. I usually look at the band on the yarn and see what hook/needle size they suggest. Sometimes I find it may be creating a tension that is a little 'loose' and go for a size smaller. If you are a knitter or a crocheter, let your own experience guide you.

PJs (Plain Janes as they are affectionately known) are the backbone of all our blankets.
