Terry, I hope you see this. With regards to Ute's generous offer there has a been a small amount of discussion under the UK group so you could post there or if you add Ute as a friend send her a direct email. I'm afraid that group messages are difficult to reply to so I hope you manage to contact her.
Terry, just a thought. If the ladies in your group are all in a care home, it might just be worth asking if the home has an 'activities budget'. They may (just might???) be prepared to make a small donation towards the cost of postage. Can't hurt to ask..... Elaine
Hi Terry and welcome to KAS. You may have seen some of the responses on the UK forum already and, certainly, I think your Post Office have quoted a much higher price that is strictly necessary. You don't say what you are sending but you should be able to send 2 Kg. parcels by surface mail for £14.45 providing the parcels are not too big. Pam and I do run a UK registered charity although it's not exactly just for sending squares to South Africa. We support other local charities as well as KAS because people like to knit different things and KAS can't distribute all the items we get. We have many local knitters who love to knit but, like your group, can't afford the postage so we raise funds in order to distribute the knitting we receive. Unfortunately we can't, at the moment, accept knitting destined for S Africa from groups around the country because we just can't raise sufficient funds to ship everything. If you can divide your parcel into two so they weigh just under 2 kg. and just under 1 kg and then squash them (!) so they are small enough to be sent by the 'small parcels' rate (measurements are in the discussion on postage costs), it will only cost a total of £22.50, which is a lot better than £65.00. If I can be of any more help, do please contact me. You can email me at: elaine@corndonmanor.com or phone me on 01588 650323. Our website is www.knitforlife.co.uk
Hi Terry, what a shock for you ! In the Helpful Hints [see tab above] there is a Postage discussion which will be helpful. We find that 2 kg parcels are the most economical. Also, Pam J and Elaine J have started a charity specifically for sending the squares to S.A. Like you they have many knitters making squares but few able to pay postage. If you join the UK group and ask for help, they will have suggestions for you. I'm in Canada so I can't be more specific. [I pay $30.23 for 2 kg ]
Hello Terry, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.
Looking for patterns? Check the KAS Pattern Book for garments and squares for the children. We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old.
Please visit “Helpful Hints” [see menu bar above] for information:
- Questions you may have (FAQs),
- How to navigate the forum,
- Postage information and
- Learn when your squares arrived in South Africa!
We have a ‘Drive to Fill Ronda’s KASvan’ with squares and would appreciate if you would add to this challenge. We have filled the KASvan already and are trying to fill it again.
We have a monthly challenge as well. This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting. The September challenge is all about Education ! Please join us here to see what others have made for ‘educational’ squares and then add a few of your own :-)
If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month. Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, it will be appreciated and you are keeping children warm.
As always, making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people around the world, squares are needed all the time.
We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option in the tabs above and follow the prompts.
