      Hi Gail

Happy Birthday and best wishes for a great year ahead.

Hi Gail, thanks for the comment about my squares.  I enjoy crocheting for KAS.  Yours will be appreciated in South Africa.  Plain Janes, as we call them, are the backbone of KAS.  When you look at the e-zines you will see that most of the blankets are made with PJs.

The cheapest way to mail from Canada is by surface mail.  It takes 2-3 months but it doesn't matter as squares are arriving all the time.  You can send smaller parcels but the most economical way is to have a parcel which weighs just under 2 kg and has dimensions no larger than 90 cm .  When you are ready let me know and I'll add more tips :-)

Hii Gail, when you are ready to mail your squares let me know and I will give you some tips on mailing from Canada.

Hi Gail, welcome to the forum from a fellow Canadian!  We are so pleased you have joined our world-wide family of knitters and crocheters.  We are dedicated to keeping the children in South Africa warm.

Bev has given you good tips about the squares.  Also some of the knitters like to make diagonal squares.  This solves the problem of size and makes a lovely pattern.  I'm a crocheter but there are photos of great looking diagonal squares on the photo page.

Everyone loves to see what others are doing so please post photos of your work.  Just click on the photo section at the top of the page and then follow the prompts.

Have you had a chance to look at the e-zines ?  They provide wonderful photos of how our squares are helping these vulnerable children.  Their smiles are priceless !

After you have a look around you might like to join the Canadian Corner.  We discuss things that are particularly Canadian.....such as the weather :-) Also you can join any other group you would like.

      Hi Gail

Re: your problem getting the size right. It doesn't have to be EXACTLY 8" squares, the folk in SA are good at 'making them fit'. However, you might find the following useful. When you are in the forum, if you scroll down the list of discussions until you get to one called "KAS- Questions, Answers and Help". Click on it and scroll down to bottom of first page and then click on page 5. You will see two discussions listed as "square size" and "Knitting Square Size".

I also find that the yarn varies from brand to brand and sometimes  find myself knitting and unpicking a few times. Using Aussie 8 ply or DK yarn (and apparently the thickness can differ from country to country) I put 36/38 stitches on 5mm needles.

Sorry, don't know if I've helped or confused you!!

      Hi Gail

Welcome to KAS... from Australia. So glad you have joined us. I see you are finding your way around the forum....any questions please don't forget to ask. We are a friendly, supportive bunch always ready to help our fellow KASers in any way we can.

Do you knit, crochet or perhaps do both??? Anything you are able to make to provide warmth to the vulnerable children of South Africa will be most welcome.

I see you are from B.C. I have a sister who lives in Kamloops...small world, eh?

      Once again...welcome...and enjoy!
