Greetings Hanna from the middle of Canada where I'm still waiting for the trees to leaf out and for it to quit snowing on and off! I think I'll do what my neighbors have done and stick out tubs of artificial flowers...one does get tired of waiting for a chance to plant flowers.  Hopefully this year the wild deer will not try and eat them too, they've tried in the past...I honestly thought they were brighter than that!  Meanwhile I find coming to Knit A Square always brightens my day, seeing everyone from around the world chipping in and sharing ideas and funny pet pictures and answering questions etc. So glad you can join us! Hello!

      Hi Hanna,

I have heard of Tunisian crochet.  I will look it up on the internet.  It sounds interesting.

Regarding the 8 x 8 inch squares – a person can send any amount of squares that they like.  Every square is precious, so it does not have to be large amounts.  I take my parcel to the post office and have them weigh it.  Then I put in (or take out) squares to bring it up to the limit and not go over by a few grams so it does not get too expensive.  Also, sending by surface mail is cheaper and it will get there very well.  Just make sure to wrap it in waterproof wrapping.  Many put their work in a plastic bag and then wrap it.

The postal address is on the main page in the upper left hand corner:

      POSTAL ADDRESS:

Please read information on the Helpful Hints page regarding mailing, customs, etc. under POSTAGE INFORMATION:

If your squares are wool, it is a good idea to put a small note or label on them.  They sort the squares by wool, acrylic or wool/acrylic blend.  We have a yarn here in Canada that is a blend, so I put a note on it whenever I send some.

I hope this helps.  Please ask if you have questions.  Everyone is so nice here and helpful.  I asked a lot of questions when I first joined.  :)   Best, Arlene

Welcome to KAS, Hanna.  I live on the Pacific side of Canada.  Do you like to knit or crochet?  Some so very talented people do both!  Mostly I like to knit.  I like to look through the photos page for inspiration looking at others people work.  There are so many ideas there.  This is such a friendly site and people are always willing to help if there are any questions. A very warm welcome!

      Hi Hanna.

A warm welcome to KAS....from over here in Western Australia.  :))

Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people from around the world, squares are needed all the time. The basic square being a garter stitch/single colour or striped square or I think it is single or double crochet  if your preference is for crochet. By clicking on the KASpattern book tab at the top of the page you can also find lots of other patterns provided by our fellow KASers.

Please check out the 'Helpful Hints' tab at the top of the page as this may answer many initial questions you may have and will help you get started. Any other questions...just ask...we love to help.  :))

Here is a link to postage information, including our packing slip that we attach INSIDE our parcel to assist in the unpacking/recording process at KAS in S. Africa.

If you'd like to see what other KASers have been making please click on the photo tab at the top of the page....and feel free to add photos of your own work...we would love to see them. Just click on 'add photos' and follow the prompts. Anything you care to make and send will be so appreciated by Ronda and the team and the children of South Africa.

If you want to see the most active discussions at present, you may like to click on the 'main page' tab and they are listed in the centre of that page...just pick one and click on it. It is a large website, but with so much fun and info.

Each month we have a fun theme to inspire and motivate us. If you would like to see this month's theme, please click on this link:

It is just for fun and there is no pressure to join in.  ANY squares you may like to make will be much appreciated.  :))

Here is a wonderful song created by one of our member's and her family. You might like to take the time to listen...you'll love it.
