Welcome to KAS, Imogen from across the Pond in Canada.  Sorry I can't help with the knitting, I crochet. Sorry I'm late with the welcome...my Inbox got away from me and I was feeling poorly for abit.  I have "fun" getting the squares exactly 8 inches too.  7-9 inches generally will fit into a blanket, as knit is rather stretchy.  I try for 7 1/2 to 8 1/2. I suppose you could knit a few rows around the outside of the square, that'd be interesting challenge eh?  Anyways, I find KAS such a rewarding cause to be involved in and I hope you enjoy it too.  Do check out the New Member Guide which is found by clicking "Main Page" in the header above.  To reach the Discussions just click Forum above. Any questions just PM me. :)  Welcome to Knit A Square! Blankets and hats and sweaters direct from our hands to their hearts, a win-win.

Hi Imogen and welcome to KAS.  I have great sympathy with you.  My tension is rubbish, so I stick to jumpers and hats.  When you find your way round the forum you will find you are not alone.

There are 3 areas which I have found that can create problems with squares:

      1. Double knitting wool is not always the same thickness so you may need more or less stitches.  As Christine says in this instance try about 5 or 6.

      2. Size of needles.  For double knitting I use 4mm.

      3.  Tension

If all else fails try crochet.  I am having lessons at the moment and although I still have the tension problem I find it easier to get the 8".  U tube are good for these, if you google - How to crochet..........whatever there will be a video.

Best of luck, and happy knitting. Barbara
