Hi Deborah Last Thursday I took myself off to the South African High Commission in Canberra and spoke to Lady by the name of Heather to see if it would be possible to arrange to get the Aussie knitted squares to Rhonda without  the postage costs. My thoughts were that  People coming and going Via the commission could take some each trip or maybe a SA company who imports Aussie goods could include some in the freight.

Heather is going to look into the possibilities I'have done a count of the last 3 months of the squares received in SA and we  Aussies are sent about 1500 a month  I hope to hear something positive soon Regards Mary

      Hi Deborah

Best wishes for a Happy Birthday from over here in West Oz.

I have been watching the overnight temperatures for Canberra on the nightly news...you poor thing...stay warm. :))

Thanks Deborah, I wonder if it would be worth posting on the Australian group.  Maybe some else could approach their local Post office with the same request.

      Linda

Hi Deborah,  just read your comment that Australian Post provided free postage.  How did you manage that ?   It would be a bonus if AusPost would provide the postage for more members !

      Thanks

      Linda

Welcome, Deborah, from suburban Philadelphia in the USA. So glad you've joined us!

Hello Deborah, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.

Every month, we list the squares, beanies and tops that have arrived in South Africa. To find the ‘Squares lists’ please click the Forum tab [see tabs above] then on “Tallies/Item Count” for an up-to-date listing.

Click Here for a few tips for sending your parcel. Postal information is here.

We have a challenge for each month.  This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns. A theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting.  An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.

This month we are Celebrating the Variegated Square.   These yarns are such fun and create a uniquely different pattern with each square made.  We would love to see your creations !  Click here to join the discussion.

As always, making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since it takes 35 different squares to make one blanket, squares are needed all the time

If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the month.  Those of us who use sea-mail find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, know it will be appreciated and that you are keeping children warm.

      Enjoy !

Greetings Deborah from over in the middle of Canada where it jumped from having overnight frosts to 28C/82F yesterday...crikey! At the same time, the South African orphans are experiencing winter, and I guess you are too.  Welcome to KAS and we're glad to have you with us.  Just click on various options in the header above to scoot around the site. I recommend Photos to see what a few of the members have made--talk about yarn artists, crikey! And click on Forums to go to all the discussion pages, scroll down to find Cafe KAS where a lot of funny discussions happen and you can ask tons of questions and get advice, also the Patterns section includes some tried and true original  KAS patterns donated by members, and Groups will take you to groups from any country you might wish to join.  Any questions, just ask us, and welcome to Knit A Square, glad you found us!  Love, Jeanne
