Have now posted another 992 since I last wrote on here with another parcel ready to post but have noted request to delay. Crowle ladies have now knitted more than 2000, just over 14 metres so breaking all initial targets. They are keen to continue. As well as providing something valuable for the children, this has provided an activity for many who are less able to get out and about but still want to do something worthwhile so everyone is a winner.
Hi Dorothy, how exciting ! Over 1000 squares....that's a lot of warm children :-)
Did you take pictures ? I hope so. Would you add them to the photo gallery so others can be inspired by your group's achievements.[also add a short note of explanation, of course ]
It's great that the golfers are supporting you financially. The cost is prohibitive for many people. I think I mentioned to check the Postage discussion for size and weight restrictions from Australia.
Hi Dorothy, how wonderful that you have established a knitting group and have set your own challenge. 2 metres will be an impressive number of squares, which means more warm children. Wouldn't it be incredible if you could make enough squares to reach the highest point of land ! We would love to see the photos when you reach the cross height [as well as photos of your squares ]
Welcome to Knit A Square from the middle of Canada! Kinda snowy out there and the windchill is -34C but I’m inside so that’s good. Greetings! We’re very glad to have you with us. Please feel free to visit Discussions or join Groups to talk about things or go to Photos to see what some members are up to. These are in a line on top of the page, just click on them. As for the photos, talk about yarn artistry! Try not to be intimidated by some squares and sweaters, they’re very inspiring. I’m a plain square person myself but it’s lovely to view the more artsy squares. KAS is a very positive group and all these squares and sweaters and hats etc. go to help the poorest of the poor, the South African AIDS/HIV orphans who are parent-less and being cared for by many good and kind folk in often desperate surroundings. Our crocheted, knitted and sewn items can help give a child hope for the future because they are not forgotten, plus warmth and a smile and often a toy to cuddle. Glad you’re with us!
No worries Dorothy. I’m wondering if your problem is the DK yarn? Looking at the pattern it calls for Aran and 5.00 mm needles. Would you try it again with Aran and let me know how it works. If there is a problem with the pattern we want it fixed !!
BTW, although I’m in Canada I have an idea where Crowle is ! My husband was born near Middlesbrough and we visit family in the area every 2-3 years.
Hello Dorothy, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters. As the name implies, we focus on sending 8” x 8”(20 cm x 20 cm) squares to be made into blankets to provide comfort to the many children in need.
Looking for patterns? Check the KAS Pattern Book [see menu bar above] for garments and squares for the children. We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old. This age group is in need of warm garments and blankets.
Please visit “Helpful Hints” [see menu bar above] for information about: Questions you may have (FAQs), how to navigate the forum and Postage information.
We have monthly challenges that you might be interested in joining. This month we are focussing on long-sleeved garments for the children to wear during their cold winters. Click here to read all about it ! [This challenge runs until April so please feel free to join any time ]
At the same time we are running a second challenge: KAS Reaches Great Heights for the Children has us making squares to reach the height of Table Mountain in South Africa. That is 178,000 squares ! Click here to join us by adding your squares and a photo, if possible, to the total.
If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month. Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Since parcels are arriving all the time, please use the most inexpensive way to send. Whenever your parcel arrives, it will be appreciated.
Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people from around the world, squares are needed all the time.
We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option in the tabs above and follow the prompts.
