Greetings Jacqualine from over in the middle of Canada. I could use some of your warmth right now, it's about -31C! Sorry I’m late with this, I caught a blasted cold, drat it! Regardless, welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us. It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.
The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Anyone Want to Chat Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic! Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
I only use DK yarn like Charity or Chicks as it is much cheaper than chunky yarn, but this is up to you :) I don't have a pattern for mittens, but I love knitting KAS Cuddles. Here is the link to the KAS pattern book if you need some ideas for squares, beanies, jerseys etc.
Welcome to KAS Jacqualine :) I cast on 44 stitches on 4.5mm needles to make a 20cm square. Another option is to check the label on the yarn. if it says 20 stitches make 10cm then you cast on 40 stitches. Another option is to knit a diagonal squares where you start in the one corner. It makes a perfect squares :)
Welcome Jacqualine. I live basically just up the hill from you in the Howick area. In reply to your question about needles and yarn to get a 20 cm square I found it easier to knit those corner to corner squares where you start with 1 or 2 stitches and increase until the side measures 20 cm. That works for me or else I crochet the squares.
Hello Jackie, so glad you have joined us. You know first hand the problems the orphaned children face.
Sorry, I'm not a knitter plus I live in Canada so definitely wouldn't be of any help in needle sizes !! If you have a look in the KAS Pattern book [see tab above], it might help you with sizes of needles and number of stitches. Otherwise please join the African Knitwits group and ask your question there. http://forum.knit-a-square.com/group/AfricanKnitwits
If you haven’t already, please read through the welcome message on the forum main page for helpful hints and things that might interest you. The FAQ category should answer any general questions you may have. If not, please ask. http://forum.knit-a-square.com
Looking for patterns? Check the KAS Pattern Book for garments for the children. We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old.
You might like the Monthly challenge. This is a fun way to try new ideas or patterns. Every month, a theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different.
February’s challenge is Transportation. Have a look at the discussion for ideas on what you can make. If you would prefer to work with Plain Janes then have fun with colours that remind you of transportation. Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares, especially Plain Janes are needed all the time.
Hi Jacqualine and a very warm welcome to KAS from Norfolk UK. We are a very friendly bunch so please feel free to ask any questions, there is always somebody with an answer, as I have found out!
Do take a look around the site using the tabs at the top of the page
The pattern tab will take you to some wonderful knit and crochet patterns of items that are desperately needed. We are focusing on children aged 4-9 years old.
Using patterns from the KasPattern Book , which are designed for the older child, will ensure you send exactly what the children need to keep them the warmest.
The photo section has some wonderful pics of peoples work and when you feel ready it would be great to see some of your work but it isn’t a necessity to do this. It’s a great place for ideas and inspiration to keep the children warm.
So glad you have joined us. Happy knitting/crocheting :)
