Greetings Jenny from across The Pond in the middle of snowy Canada! Have you thawed out yet? Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us.  It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.

The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Café KAS Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic!  Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!

Hi Jenny, delighted to be your friend :-)

    • Christine Johnson March 25, 2013 at 6:21am

Hello Jenny from a fairly close neighbour - I live in Lowestoft. I see that you say you have started your first square - have you just learned to knit/crochet? My daughter-in-law learned failry recently in her twenties and is becoming pretty good now. If you'd like to join the UK group for more localised news and chat we'd love to have you, and please do ask if you have queries - there is always someone happy to help

Hello Jenny, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.

If you haven’t already, please read through the welcome message on the forum main page for helpful hints and things that might interest you. The FAQ category should answer any general questions you may have. If not, please ask. http://forum.knit-a-square.com

Wondering what is needed besides squares ? Here is a link to Ronda’s wish list for 2013 :  http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/topics/kas-wish-list-guideline...

Looking for patterns?  Check the KAS Pattern Book for garments and squares for the children.  We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old.

Every month, we list the squares, beanies and tops that have arrived in South Africa. To find the ‘Squares lists’ please click the Forum tab [in the toolbar above] then on “Tallies/Item Count” for an up-to-date listing.

Click Here for a few tips for sending your parcel.

KasSnippets has been e-published and I thought you might find it interesting to read.

We have a challenge for each month.  This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns. A theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting.  An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.

This month’s challenge is the Four Seasons.  What colours come to mind when you think about the seasons in your country ?   For me, here in Canada, winter will be blues, greys and whites.  Then we have the much anticipated spring with its pinks and bright greens.  Make as many squares as you like in the colours that remind you of your seasons.  Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares are needed all the time.

If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month.  Those of us who use sea-mail find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, know it will be appreciated and that you are keeping children warm.

We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option at the top of the page and follow the prompts.

      Enjoy !
