Joanne if the square is 9 inches don't unpick it hon...they fit in just fine and they make up for the sometimes smaller squares people send. I agree a 7 inch square is frustrating...unless one knits a border around it once finished...I've seen KASers do that. I'll do just about anything to avoid frogging/unravelling a square! Please don't worry if the square isn't right on 8 inches, mine are usually over or under by a little bit and the squares will either squish or stretch to fit. :)
Hi Joan...for me, working on 5 mm needles with worsted, casting on 30 stitches works to come out pretty danged right on 8 inches every time. Or close enough, dang it! LOL
Joanne don't worry if the squares come out not exactly 8 inches. A square can be from 7 1/2 inches up to 9 inches and it will be stretched or squished to fit in somehow. It's easier on the girls if we get as close to 8 inches as possible. I find my squares in crochet are often a bit over or under 8 inches. In knitting it's easier for me to hit 8 inches almost right on. Since the squares have some give in them, even squares that don't look quite square will often fit in just fine.

I did (or thought it had been sent) reply to your question last night....so I will try again now. The knit one purl one is the pattern and the purl one at the start of every second row, as stated, is what makes the pattern work.
It can depend on the thickness of your 8ply yarn and what size needles you use, but for most 8 ply I buy, I use 5mm needles and I think maybe 39 stitches in this case as it is a rib and rib tends to make the work a little narrower would give you an 8" square. This would mean 19x2=38+1=39. This just means that on the patterned row you will purl 1, then k1,p1 nineteen times.
