Hi Kathy, you sound quite talented in many areas. Perhaps some of the quilting patterns will be inspiration for knitted or crocheted squares. I prefer to crochet and I too have lots of yarn. It must be a terrible temptation to be with the yarn all the time.....but a bargain can not be ignored :-)
Sorry clicked 'add comment' by mistake...before answering your second question...lol...that's me I'm afraid, mind on half dozen things at once..
KAS does prefer that we send squares because complete blankets can attract duty, if the parcel should be checked by customs (and as they work on an absolute shoe-string budget these extra costs put a huge strain on monetary resources) and also we work in partnership with the Soweto Comfort Club, who like to contribute by sewing them together and there is also a prison over there where the prisoners sew the blankets together as part of their rehabilitation...i.e. giving back to their community. So as you see, sending squares benefits everyone...
Also knitted and crocheted squares from all over the world can come together in each blanket...and isn't that special??? However should you wish to create your own special blanket you could place the squares together, take a photo and send the photo with the squares to be made up in S. Africa, so they can sew it as you would like it to be done. If however you would like to complete the blanket from start to finish, including sewing it up...you are most welcome to do so...they love everything that each of us choose to contribute.
Happy knitting...and if you would like to...please post a pic of your knitting in the photo section..the tab is at the top of the page. We love to see what each other has been doing!!
If you have any other questions...please ask. Catch ya.
Don't be too concerned if your square doesn't turn out EXACTLY 20 cms...8" square. The wonderful stitchers in South Africa are great at making them fit...and putting them to use around the outside edge of a blanket if necessary...they will sew together anything and everything. Somtimes if I'm changing brands I might just knit up a few rows to see if it is the right measurement and if its not too far out of whack, its good to go. You know how wool can vary in thickness from brand to brand.
Greetings Kathy from over in Canada! Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us. It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.
The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Anyone Want to Chat Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic! You joined us just in time to contribute some warm squares, hats and garments for the children, as their winter is approaching as ours leaves. Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
