I'm sure you'll love C-2-C. It cuts out all the calculation of stitch numbers. You just do the number of rows you need until you get to 8 inches, then you start decreasing. Be careful though because it's very addictive. Most of my squares are C-2-C now. It's so quick and looks very nice. I also use a pattern the I call 2 loop. You have to calculate the umber of stitches (about 35 for DK yarn). Then you alternate sc in back loop then front loop. Your row will be: 1 sc in both loops for first stitch, 1 sc in front loop for second stitch. Then continue across row with 1 sc alternately in back loop, then front loop, ending with 1 sc in back loop. Chain 1 to turn and repeat row. This makes a closely crocheted texture which is warm and attractive.
I look forward to seeing photos of your work. The photos are part of the fun of being a member of KAS. I was overawed at first when I saw some of the fantastic creations from some members. The photos of finished blankets in the Blanket Room discussion is a great tonic. It's a riot of colour.
I tried the Elizabeth stitch. It's easy to do and very effective. My favourite is the corner to corner. It's the easiest way to reach 8 ins with any thickness of yarn without having to count stitches.
Knitting, crocheting or looming an 8" square or two, or possibly even a few is a wonderful gift for the children. They love to receive their blankets, created from squares, which come from kindly, caring folk such as yourself, from over 60 countries all over our world. PJs (Plain Janes as they are affectionately known) are the backbone of all our blankets. These are single colour squares that are in garter stitch(knitting) or single crochet as they are very solid and provide a contrast to a picture/striped/patterned square or two that may be added to a blanket.By clicking on the KASpattern book tab at the top of the page or our other square pattern discussion http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/topics/member-s-patterns-squaresyou can also find lots of patterns provided by our fellow K-A-Sers. Welcome to Knit-a-Sqare. I hope that you will find us a friendly group.
Knitting and crocheting squares is certainly a great way to use up yarn.
I checked out the Elizabeth stitch. It looks really nice. I'm going to try it for my next square.
