      Happy Birthday, Maggie.

Hi Maggie, thank you for your kind comment on my picture… I cheat a bit with the eyes after learning a trick. You just take a piece of black yarn and do a normal overhand knot (create a loop and pull the working end through), but instead of pulling the working end through just once, wrap it around the loop another five times. When you pull the knot tight, you get a perfect little eye shaped knot which you just attach. I don’t know if I’ve explained that very well, but it’s so much easier than trying to embroider the eyes. x

Glad to hear that! It really has a fun look with those big stripy bands. As a longtime hand-quilter, I found the double line of "dashes" in the color-change row especially appealing.

Acrylic worsted is practically the only yarn available locally, and I've been disappointed that it knits up rather stiff. So I'm testing it on larger and larger needles - may wind up using US 8 (5 mm) for the ribbed brim and US 10 (6 mm) for the stripes. I'm also not entirely pleased with the flat texture, so may try alternating bands of moss stitch. What do you think?

I'm nearly done with a second Celebration Hat in subtler colors from my stash. I photograph my wip's on Ravelry (where I'm  Veryty) while I'm writing my project notes, and then the finished objects I'l gladly post to KAS. Be sure to post yours, too :-)

What a nice variety in your assortment of squares, Maggie!

Hello Maggie - thanks for your lovely note accompanying your first seven squares, safely and gratefully received in Johannesburg. The weather is starting to turn cold and we are delighted with your kind contribution to our project to keep orphaned and vulnerable children warm and hopeful in SA ! Love from all the "KAS team" in SA.

Hi Maggie... I recommended size 5 and a half mm needles if using a fairly thick double knitting (8 ply) wool.  If you wanted to use a size 5 that works well too and you can alter the size if you wish by adding any number of extra stitches as long as you have multiples of 3..plus 2 extra stitches. Good luck and happy knitting. x

Hi Maggie, Can you imagine that? The mushrooms are still there! and they seldom grow in a village, they are growing opposite our house! warm regards, anneke
