Have you tried washing the hat? I find that that usually helps to soften up acrylic. If it doesn't work you can also try using steam from a steam iron or garment steamer, but if you go by the iron method you have to take care not to let the iron touch the fabric or it will kill the acrylic. Just hold the iron an inch or two above the fabric and keep pressing the steam button. Softening acrylic tends to flatten it even more though so yes, you could try those moss stitch bands. I'd love to see the results!

      Both your hats are beautiful!

Thanks Deborah. I liked your celebration hat so much that I favourited the pattern on Ravelry!

Hi Deborah, yes the forum is a bit overwhelming.  I joined when it was first starting, it was much easier to navigate.

Love your squares and hats in the photo section !   The hats will definitely keep the children warm.  Looking forward to more photos.

I was a knitter first as well Deborah, but I have found that crochet is a lot faster as you mentioned so that's why I've been using this pattern to crank out as many hats as I can before winter in South Africa hits.  It took me a couple of tries to get this hat pattern to work nicely for me (since I'm more of a knitter it was a little challenging initially) but now I have the pattern memorized and can make one and sometimes 2 in an evening if the yarn is at least worsted weight :) Good luck and don't hesitate to ask me questions if you do try the pattern and have trouble.

      Hi Deborah,

If you are interested in the pattern for the front post double crochet hats I make for KAS, here is a link to the free pattern:

      http://hatpattern.blogspot.ca/2010/10/front-post-double-crochet-hat...

Just a quick note about the pattern, In row 1: I think it should read ch 2 then DC in ring 11 times =12 DC total in ring, at least this is what I have success with :)

      Cheers,

      Beth

Greetings Deborah from over in Canada! I hope you had a happy Passover.  I'm late saying hi, but I'm sincere about it, just was sick for awhile.  Your work is lovely!!! So.....Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us.  It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.

The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Anyone Want to Chat Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic!  You joined us just in time to contribute some warm squares, hats and garments for the children, as their winter is approaching as ours leaves.  Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
