Hi Narelle, we really prefer squares for several reasons: Firstly, we are less likely to attract duty on squares rather than a finished blanket, secondly, we have our inmate project run by G4S where they sew the blankets for us, and finally and importantly, the blankets our children receive are democratic, made up by squares of all qualities from all overthe world. I hope that helps and answers your question!! I was worried that you might not see this in the chat section so I posted it here too. Thanks!
Hi Narelle. I saw your conversation about sending whole blankets and thought I'd respond. The baby blankets are 24 squares or 32" x 48." The children's blankets are 35 squares or 40" x 56." It is more expensive for KAS to receive whole blankets so you must write "For Charity" and "No Commercial Value" on the package. Also, on the customs slip where they ask for the value of the contents, you write "0." If you assign a dollar value to the blankets, then KAS must pay "duty" to receive them and that gets expensive for a group that has very little cash funding. If you wish to send completed blankets, they will be very happy to receive them and will be sure to give them to vulnerable children who will be warmed and hugged by your generous gifts.
Hi again Narelle, On the KAS home page, scroll down the left hand column and under Knitters, there is a click on "baby blanket" page. It is not crochet but and the page writes a lot about squares (6 x 6) but you could get the overall size for a baby blanket there. Hope this helps
Hi Narelle, welcome from Canada! These are great people here and very helpful. I tried to post on the chat about your questions on blankets. but it doesnt always work for me.
Each square is 8 x 8 inches. When the blankets are made up they are 5 squares wide and 7 squares long so that would be 40 inches wide by 56 inches long for children, so I understand. I am not sure about smaller ones for babies. I knit mostly with only a little crochet. If you go to the photos page and type in Baby blankets there will be a selection of photos made by other members. I'm not sure about dimensions for those though. Welcome again!! Arlene
Hi Narelle, welcome to the forum ! We are so pleased you have joined our world-wide family of knitters and crocheters. We are dedicated to keeping the children in South Africa warm.
If you have any questions about anything just ask. There is always someone willing to help with the answer.
Do you knit or crochet ? Everyone loves to see what others are doing so please post photos of your work. Just click on the photo section at the top of the page and then follow the prompts.
Have you had a chance to look at the e-zines ? They provide wonderful photos of how our squares are helping these vulnerable children. Their smiles are priceless !
After you have a look around you might like to join the Australian group. There you can discuss specific questions that pertain to your area of the world as yarn weights tend to differ by country. And crochet stitches are different here in Canada ! Also you can join any other group you would like.
