Hi Patricia! If you want to sew/crochet the squares together yourself I don't see why not. At first we were worried that duty would be charged in South Africa for items of clothing so we wanted everything apart, as squares, but they don't seem to be worrying. If you put on the outside of your package, "knitting for charity, no commercial value" that should be just fine. And the same on your customs declaration slip. Only difference is that I put the word "squares" in there. And since the blanket IS made of squares well I guess you could put "knitted squares for charity" couldn't you? You're just not mentioning they are joined together! :D I know, sneaky, sneaky. Heh heh heh.... ;)
