Greetings from one verrrry tardy Canadian from the middle of Canada, Phillip! Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us. It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.
The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Anyone Want to Chat Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic! Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
So sorry for the loss of your loved one, there are some people who are doing just as you are, making squares in honour and memory of family and friends. It is a wonderful thing.
When you have some time to have a look around the website, there are some wonderful photos and videos showing our squares being sewn into blankets and being given to the children, there are also some great ones showing all the parcels in Ronda's house waiting to be opened and sorted! A mammoth task I do not envy but at the same time think it would be amazing!
Welcome, Phil, from Cheltenham Township near Philadelphia in the USA. So lovely to hear that you are honoring your late wife by sending squares to KAS. Glad you found us!
Hello Philip, so glad you’ve joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters. My husband, David, also knits for KAS and finds it very rewarding. Besides, he was tired of watching me make squares and decided to pitch in !
As Bev has mentioned, please read through the welcome message on the forum main page for helpful hints and things that might interest you. The FAQ category should answer any general questions you may have. http://forum.knit-a-square.com
If you would like to try something different, you might like the Monthly challenge. This is a fun way to try new ideas or patterns. Every month, a theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.
This month’s challenge is In Celebration of the Plain Jane. Check out the different interpretations of a “Plain Jane” or basic square. Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes are the backbone of KAS. Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares are needed all the time.
Hi Phillip and welcome to KAS from over here in Western Australia.
We are so glad you have joined our global community of stitchers.
In addition to the suggestions from Carol, may I suggest that you also check out our 'welcome' message on the main page...there you will find loads of tips and useful information to get you started...and as Carol has already said, we love to answer any questions....big or small.
Happy knitting!!!! We hope you enjoy being 'one of us'. :))
Hi Philip and a very warm welcome to KAS from Norfolk UK. We are a very friendly bunch so please feel free to ask any questions, there is always somebody with an answer, as I have found out!
Do take a look around the site using the tabs at the top of the page. The photo section has some wonderful pics of peoples work and when you feel ready it would be great to see some of your work but it isn’t a necessity to do this. It’s a great place for ideas and inspiration to keep the children warm.
There is also a 'Groups' tab and you would be very welcome to join our UK group.
So glad you have joined us. Happy knitting/crocheting :)
