Hi Yvonne. They need a 50cm or 20 inch tail left on the square so that they can use it to sew the square to another. The tail on my square is the length I leave on after I have cast off and have secured it. They then ask you to 'butterfly' the tail neatly so that it is not tangled when they unpack it. If you look in the 'photo' section you can see how others do it. I usually 'butterfly' mine around a plastic sewing needle as they also need plastic sewing needles, so I 'kill two birds with one stone'.
