Welcome to Knit A Square from the middle of Canada! Sorry I’m late with this, my health’s not been brilliant lately. Am I ever brilliant? Ahem, I’m here and sincere now. Greetings! Please feel free to visit Discussions or join Groups to talk about things or go to Photos to see what some members are up to. These are in a line on top of the page, just click on them. As for the photos, talk about yarn artistry! Try not to be intimidated, I’m a plain square person myself but it’s lovely to view the more artsy squares. KAS is a very positive group and all these squares and sweaters and hats etc. go to help the poorest of the poor, the South African AIDS/HIV orphans who are parent-less and being cared for by many good and kind folk in often desperate surroundings. Our crocheted, knitted and sewn items can help give a child hope for the future because they are not forgotten, plus warmth and a smile and often a toy to cuddle. Glad you’re with us!
Hi Caren, sorry I'm late to welcoming you. This is a great forum with pictures of kas's distributions, pictures of people's work, pictures of some of the completed blankets, questions and answers, and much more. Now I sound like I'm selling KAS. Oh we'll.. :) Anyway welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy it here, as well as knitting or crocheting for the children. Best wishes, Cherry
Hello Caren, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters. It's wonderful that you are willing to send squares for your customers. Your shop sounds very interesting and I know I would enjoy visiting it, if I was a bit closer...I'm in Canada :-)

We have a monthly challenge as well. This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting. The September challenge is all about Education ! Please join us here to see what others have made for ‘educational’ squares and then add a few of your own :-)
If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month. Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, it will be appreciated and you are keeping children warm.
As always, making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people around the world, squares are needed all the time.
We would love to see photos of your/your customers' work. Click on the photo option in the tabs above and follow the prompts.
Welcome to the forum Caren. The site has become very large now and takes a while to get used to but if you have any questions there is always someone happy to help.
Your shop sounds interesting. Are you from South Africa? That's a wonderful offer but be warned, sometimes these offers can be costly. I still receive 300-400 squares monthly from a promotion in my bookshop four years ago.
At present we are just about to complete a challenge called Fill a Van (celebrating the wonderful gift of transport in South Africa) and we will soon be 'Reaching Great Heights' at the rate of 50 squares per foot so any squares you can collect will be very welcome to join in that challenge and even more welcome in South Africa.
Lovely to have you with us and please do join the UK Group if you wish (and indeed any others.)
Welcome to KAS from Tennessee, USA! So glad you've joined us in our effort to warm orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa. Sounds like you have a great start to collecting squares for us!!!
