Hello Jean, welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy being a part of this very friendly and supportive community all working for a very worthwhile cause.
When you've had a chance to look around the now very large site you'd be very welcome to join the UK group (or any others ) and then you can add your squares to the running tally we have there. Lovely to have you with us - happy knitting.
Welcome to KAS, jean from across the Pond in the middle of Canada. My mum was a whiz knitter, I'm a plodder so I stick to crocheting but both plus sewn items are welcomed here, even felted ones. I find KAS such a rewarding cause to be involved in and I hope you enjoy it too. Do check out the New Member Guide which is found by clicking "Main Page" in the header above. To reach the Discussions just click Forum above and if you click on Photos above, you will see items that are heading to Africa, in all colors and shapes, plus those that have arrived there. Any questions just PM me. :) So, welcome to Knit A Square! Blankets and hats and sweaters direct from our hands to their hearts, a win-win.
I just spotted a hat I made on the head of one of the African Children. It's such a thrill to see squares or hats one made. By the way, I make hats SIMPLY (simple brain! lol) I do a 10"x21" rectangle, basically a bit wider and longer square. Then you sew up the two short sides together to make a wide tube. Then you sew a gathering stitch around one of the ends, gather it, cinch it in and presto...hat! It's the only way I'd do them or else I'd be just squares too.
You may find yourself even venturing into making square vests (it took courage but I've done two, wow)...well now we call them more rectangular vests. Simplicity is the word here, no messy increases and decreases (my brain wouldn't handle it for a start!). All my blathering on being said, squares are the backbone of Knit-A-Square so you knitting squares is SUPER. Believe me. We need all the squares we can get, particularly now Zimbabwe is also asking for anything we can send them. Tally ho! ;)
