Hi, Im new!

Hi!

Im new to knitting and new to square circle.

I recently decided to take up knitting because I'm so tired of consumer society and the fact that people rarely make things by hand for other people anymore. On birthdays, christmas etc, there is always the expectation of giving a multitude of shiny, new, expensive and often impersonal and unapreciated gifts. I decided i wouldnt give gifts anymore unless I had made them myself. I have an abundance of friends who have children, or who could always do with a little help, and thought that knitting would make perfect presents for them. Then I came across sqaure circle and thought what better way to practice knittng and do somehting really worthwhile at the same time. So, Im really exited to get knitting.... and I'm hoping my creations and technique will improve over time!!!

Its great to be onboard!

Jess

  • Hi everyone,

Thanks heaps for the welcoming support and encouragement.
I'm still practicing various stitches but will be starting on the squares soon... I think Im getting a bit more competent! It's a nice rainy day today, so its perfect for sitting back with a cuppa and knitting.

Have a lovely week people :)
  • Welcome Jess, there's many great free knitting patterns online once you feel more confident with your knitting, great patterns for kids' toys too. I know what you mean about nobody hand making stuff, I think it makes them doubly precious gifts now.

If you want to see the incredible creativity of the younger generation check out http://www.craftster.org/ It is an immense site, very busy. I love looking at the repurposed shoes, the jewellery, the crochet, some of the sewing. You can spend a lot of time there but wow there's a ton of creative talented people on this planet. Glad to meet you! Power to your needles! :D
  • Yes Jess you will improve there is no doubt about that. The squares really neaten up and get faster and then you can try out new stitches! nitted blankets for babies area great present and then there is the harder stuff to come later. I agree doing something by hand for family and friends really is a nice way to say you don't need shiny and plastic to be beautiful! I have been doing blankets[ Throws] for my sons in between KAS and they have been really appreciative to my surprise. I also made them scapbooks of their lives and two of them said I don't think anyone has ever made me anything like that. One of my sons watches me knitting for KAS and reminisces about the jumpers I made for him when he was younger. Enough of my anticonsumerism rambles. Anyway I am rather a large consumer of yarn now!!! Watch out for the yarnaholicism.
  • Excellent outlook Jess, very best of luck with your knitting. Please let us know how you go!
  • Hello Jess, and welcome to the fold.
How are you gonna learn the craft?
there are many tutorials online, and several books. quite a lot of yarn shops help as well.
looking forward to seeing pics of your work
    xx
