Yes, side seams are sewn together, I didn't crochet all the way round the arm hole, it is just a sort of 'frilly thing!!'. I thought if I crocheted the whole arm hole, it would restrict movement a bit, so by leaving it open it should be ok.
This is the square vest pattern. I used 6mm needles, a purple double knit and a multicoloured 'fluffy wool' that gives a lovely snug texture. I did 6 rows of ribbing at the bottom to give it a nice band, then 60 rows stocking stitch, then 4 rows ribbing for kneck line, row 5 rib 9 cast off 26 rib 9, row 6 rib 9 cast on 26 rib 9, 4 rows ribbing, 60 rows stocking stitch, 6 rows ribbing (everything in reverse!!). Then all you need to do is sew up the sides (I do mine to just over half way to allow room for other clothes worn underneath).
This is how my late Grandma used to knit herself a quick jumper many years ago (with the ribbing), and she taught me when I was in my very early teens ( a long time ago now - yikes!!). Hope this helps. Oops, forgot to add, on some other vests I have knitted, I made one side a couple of rows longer, so when you stitch up the sides, the neck takes on a better shape - I haven't done this on the ones with the rib at the neck though.
Might I add (Jeanne here) to always make sure your vests are 3 inches longer than they are wide, to fit over often swollen little tummies. Thank you! :)
