Hi! Was reading Janet's page and picked up your comment about cats and had to laugh because my cat is at my feet demanding attention and if I don't get up and attend to her (food, food, food) I'll get a little nip on my heel - so I'm off - slave to the queen.
Your cat sounds like me--thyroid and arthitits! LOL :) ! Good luck with the crochet stitiches. I think that you will be able to figure out the different terms--there may be conversion charts on the internet. I did mention cats in this thread. I do not have a cat as my oldest son is very allergic to cats. Now that he is married, my husband and I were thinking of adopting a cat. We both love dogs and cats. My concern now is that my dog, Bruno, is afraid of cats. He is a great friend and getting quite elderly so we do not want to upset him too much. My neighbor's cats consider my husband and I as extended family so we get our cat-love from them. Have a wonderful day! Best, Janet

Go for it! The hats are simple to make. The fun is in the colors and then seeing how it comes out in the end. The ribbed hats that I made were also from rectangles. For one hat I used single crochet and for the other I used half double crochet. The ribbed effect is achieved by picking up only the front half of the loop in every row. I made these rectangles a bit longer on the shorter side of the rectangle, finished the top the same and then rolled up a "cuff". The red and black hat was made from a rectangle (red center with black edging) where I stitched both the top of the hat and the side of the hat in a straight seam. I folded the two top corners down until they met in the middle and tacked the two points down. I then added a black "cuff" by using a half double crochet around the circumference of the head opening. Remember that when you add the contrasting black "cuff" you need to have the wrong side (inside) of the hat facing you so that when you turn up the "cuff", the right side is shows. Last, I added the pom-pom where the two top points meet. I hope this was not too confusing. Have fun and I can' wait to see your creations!

Hi Suzan! Many thanks for the compliment on the hats. Yes, they are made from rectangles. I made all my hats from rectangles. for the multi-colored hats with the black edging. I just started with a double crocheted rectangle about 2.5 inches (approx 6.4 cm) by 5 inches (approx 12.8 cm) made from some left over yarn. I added a black half double crochet border and kept adding half double rochet borders in colors that I thought blended well, ending with black. I folded the rectangle in half, sewing the shorter sides together leaving about 1.5 inches (appproximately 3.8 cm) open at the bottom. I used a simple runnning stitch around the top and pulled the thread tightly to close the opening. I made an "X" stitch and then tied a stitcers knot on the inside of the hat to secure it. Lastly, I added a pom-pom to the very top and turned up the bottom edges into a "cuff". I did put a single tacking stitch at the back of the hat to keep the "cuff" in place. Thanks for asking! I want to find a 'tarantaal' pattern which is on almost everything in the tourist shops. We have a few lives ones running around our village much to my cats horror - what with those and the hadeda's no wonder they stay inside so much -not to mention the leguaan that lives in the culvert.
