DOGTOOTH CHECK

I found this stitch in a 'Simply Knitting' magazine stitch library. I knitted it in chunky yarn, on 6mm needles, casting on 27 stitches and knitting 50 rows. It makes a nice warm square.

Double stitch: insert the needle into the stitch just below the next stitch and knit, drop the unworked stitch above.

Cast on an uneven number of stitches

Row 1(RS) With yarn A, knit

Row2 Knit

Row3 With yarn B, K1 * double stitch,K1;repeat from* to end of row

Row4 Knit

Row 5 change to yarn A, K2,*double stitch, K1: repeat from* to last 2 sts, K2

Row 6 Knit

Repeat rows 3-6 to form the pattern

  • Looks great when i saw picture thought it was crochet and not good at that. but when I read the pattern it is knitted looks good. I followed the link to see the tuitorial on bee hive stitch looks easy so will have to try it out. Thanks Fom jan a new member.

  • That looks great, Charis! This is when it pays to knit instead of crochet. :o)
  • This is very beautiful, obviously warm and I've added it to the Patterns section as well.  Way to go and thanks so much for sharing a beautiful pattern...I am imagining a child's jumper/sweater in this...but yeah I am NOT ambitious enough to try it!
    • Thank you for adding this to the pattern section and the featured photos-I am thrilled it is so popular! I must admit I can see lots of possibilities for it-and it really is easy, I promise!
  • That's ok Donna-what it means is that you put the point of your needle into the stitch BELOW the next one and then knit it off as usual, so you are in effect knitting through two loops/ stitches at once-it is easier than it sounds!

I have found a tutorial for what looks like exactly the same stitch, only called Bee Stitch, which shows this quite clearly.

    I hope this helps!

    • Charis,

I just watched that tutorial and now I understand exactly what's meant by "the stitch below."  I had never encountered such a move before - love it!

Thanks for researching till you found that video - it showed me immediately what you were talking about.  Tonight, I start my dogtooth square!

I appreciate the help so much!

      • 2964996855?profile=RESIZE_480x480Hey, Charis:

After watching the video, I am now trying the stitch, and, as you can see in the somewhat out-of-focus photo above, it's working!  I look forward to doing several of these neat squares!  It's one of those mysterious knitting patterns that works even when I can't figure out exactly HOW it works!  What fun to see the pattern emerging!  Thanks so much for posting it!

        • This looks brilliant, Donna, I can't wait to see the finished squaresI am so pleased you are enjoying knitting it and found the tutorial helpful-youtube is a wonderful thing!

    • Charis, I looked at that tutorial and I was fascinated by the way the knitter held her yarn, in her left hand. Does anybody else knit like that? I couldn't decide if it looked harder or easier but I suspect that having struggled with crochet for so long I would find it difficult.
      • I don't think I could manage it but I am not a very stylish or speedy knitter- I still do it the way I was taught 50 years ago and hold the yarn in my right hand, take it off the needle and wind it round then take hold of the needle again to push the stitch off. Definitely not the most elegant way to knit but it works for me! I think the most important thing is to find out what feels most comfortable for you-if I try to change my technique now all I do is drop stitches!
