      Hello Marion,
Thank you for the invitation to join your group. I live in a small village called Draughton, Near Skipton. It's one of those places people have never heard of. I would love to join your group if you will have me! I just need to work out how to actually do that and I'm there.
I have only knitted 4.5 extremely basic squares so far but they are all warm and usable so I guess that's all that matters. I have plans to knit more exciting, challenging pieces after I've used up my left over bits and bobs!
      Andrew.

Hi there Marion, I'm currently doing some squares, I'm not the fastest knitter that and i have a 7 month old daughter who has found she likes shuffling to my wool. Every so often i get wet bits. My square seems to be 8.5in by 8.5in do you think that matters? My husbands family come from near easby x

      Hi Marion,

Thanks for getting in touch and inviting me to join the Yorkshire Group. I found out about KAS in a crochet magazine about 4 years ago and have sporadically been knitting and crocheting for KAS ever since - mainly squares, but I've done a few hats and a couple of T-shirts. I'd love to do more but it's making the time along with everything else - my husband and I "retired" up here from London a couple of years ago and somehow I'm as busy as I ever was in London! Perhaps I need a bit of a challenge/inspiration, if anyone's up for that.....

Have a great Christmas! God bless, Cathryn

Hello Marion,  Thanks for the invitation to join the Yorkshire Group.   I feel a bit of a fraud because I do not consider myself to be a knitter, or any other kind of needlewoman!   After seeing an article about Knit-a-Square, I decided to teach myself to knit (at the age of 65!).  It is easy to give money to charities but I thought this would take some effort and would be satisfying if I succeeded in producing a useable square.  After about a dozen very dodgy squares, I finally got the hang of it and, 60 or so respectable looking squares later, I've graduated to Teddy hand puppets - just finished No. 8.  I can't see me ever being good enough to knit a garment but who knows.  In the meantime,  I'm enjoying contributing to the stash of blanket squares.  I hope to get a parcel of my squares and a friend's beautiful crocheted squares in the mail this week.   Kind regards Liz

Hi Marion, nice to hear from you. I live in Selby, North yorkshire.

I haven't crocheted any squares for a few week as my mum died in October and it's been a hard and busy period, but hope to do some in the new year. Louise

      Hi, Marion!

I live in Wetherby and knit Tshirts mainly. I belong to Wetherby U3A, and we've started a knitting group, and ALL our members knit squares, hats, Tshirts etc for KAS. The only problem is getting everything to Africa. I have a friend whose son goes occasionally, and, bless him, he takes a suitcase full of our knits with him whenever he goes.

I wonder if you're anywhere near Wetherby?

      With best wishes. Margaret

Hello Marion, and welcome! It's good you have hopped right in, the forum can be a bit intimidating until you figure it all out. Thanks for joining!

Hello Marion, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.  As the name implies, we focus on sending 8” x 8”(20 cm x 20 cm) squares to be made into blankets to provide comfort to the many children in need.

I see you have already discovered the KAS Pattern Book . We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old.

As Anne has mentioned, the “Helpful Hints” [see menu bar above] is a good place for information about:

      - Questions you may have (FAQs),

      - How to navigate the forum,

      - Postage information and

      - Learn when your squares arrived in South Africa!

We have a monthly challenge as well.  This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting.  An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting. The November challenge is Toys and Games and Teddy bears ! Do you have a special memory of a favourite toy or game from your childhood? That could be a wonderful inspiration for squares!

At the same time we are running a second challenge: KAS Reaches Great Heights for the Children has us making squares to reach the height of Table Mountain in South Africa.  That is 178,000 squares !  We have just passed the Angel of the North and are on to Egypt.  Click here to join us by adding your squares and a photo, if possible, to the total.

If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month.  Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Since parcels are arriving all the time, please use the most inexpensive way to send.  Whenever your parcel arrives, it will be appreciated.

Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax [especially on the bus !] and help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people around the world, squares are needed all the time.

We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option in the tabs above and follow the prompts.

      Enjoy !
