Hi my name is Marci and I am from Johannesburg South Africa where I have lived all my life. I just happened to find the KAS site whilst searching for a knitting guild in my area. I have always been a passionate knitter and have also tried my hand at crochet. When I went into the KAS site I was taken aback by the amazing work that is being done by people from all over the world for the AID Orphans in S.A. I immediately signed up and since then have been knitting up a storm of squares. I also have squares to knit for my grandsons school as they are also given to charity and made up into blankets (all for a good cause). Winter is on its way and besides the squares I also have a lot of knitting to do for the grandkidlets, hubby and myself. In all of my 60 odd years I have never knitted something for myself and decided the time had come. I hope to make lots of new and interesting friends on the site besides giving of myself and time towards such a worthy cause.

Hi Kalai, thank you so much for welcoming me to the KAS family. I have just finished a square and am about to start another. I feel so fulfilled knowing that I am doing something for a worhty cause. Besides knitting for KAS our winter has just begun and so I knit for my grandchildren, daughter and hubby as well. I am up in the early hours of the morning as I don't sleep very well and that gives me a chance to do as much knitting as i can. Hope we can chat again soon.
My name is Maxine and I live in Cape Town, glad to see another Safrican here, we seem to be in the minority. I have lived in Johannesburg until last March. Welcome.
Hi Maxine good to hear from you, you lucky fish living in Cape Town. I would give anything to be living at the coast. Yes it does seem as if we are in the minority but is'nt it wonderful that there are so many people from so many different countries who are contributing to KAS. Do you knit or crochet or maybe do both? I prefer knitting to crochet but am going to try my hand at some crochet as I do think it goes a whole lot quicker. Thank you for welcoming me to the KAS family and I hope we can chat again.
You wouldn't think I was so lucky in 50km/h winds LOL. But yes, it is lovely here. I knit, haven't really crocheted, I tend to have a project on the go most of the time and knit for KAS when I am between them. I need to send the few squares I have done and get on with my first attempt at knitting with DPNs, which has involved much starting then pulling out and starting again.
Hi Mazine, so good to hear from you. Oh!!! my goodness the winds sound hectic. It is getting very chilly here in Johannesburg and I must say although I prefer cooler weather to very hot I don't really like the very cold winters. Like you I also have lots of projects on the go at the same time as knitting for KAS. I have some squares I must send off and just hope the measurements are right. It is so fulfilling to know that my squares will go to making a child a little warmer this winter. Chat again soon.
Hello Marci and Maxine, it IS good to have you with KAS. Like Andrea, I think many of us would be very interested in a S.African perspective. I have often wondered if the current Government is aware of KAS and its work.....?
I stayed at Bloubergstrand for a week in 2005 and will never forget it, it was so beautiful...or the minibus taxi ride to town which picked up passengers from a township on the way, where there was so much hardship, yet pride in immaculate appearance ready for work. With KAS it's great to know that I can do something directly for SOMEONE in S.A even if it's small compared to the size of the need.
It is hard here to keep up with the sheer amount of people that need help, I find that if I can do anything to help children, it's what makes me feel better. So doing what I enjoy, even using the knitting of squares to learn some new techniques or stitches is very rewarding.
I agree. An American writer has a good quote on the cover of her book, saying "knitting...making the world a better place, 1 stitch at a time". All our KAS stitches add up to a lot! The book is "Knitting for Peace" by Betty Christiansen.
Good luck with the DPNs, it feels like knitting with hedgehogs to me, just can't get it. Or circular needles which is like knitting with a snake. After MANY attempts Idecided to stick to what I know and love, just straight needles. happy knitting!
I have to admit that I gave up and am knitting them on straight needles, I don't mind the circular needles though and the knowledge that I won't have to sew the side seams of the cardigan make me happy. I am, however determined to master the DPNs, by next Easter I will have made at least one pair of socks for my daughter, which she prefers to Easter eggs.
